An Artistic Addition to Spokane: the City's First Poet Laureate

By Paige Browning

The world of literary and poetic work kept Spokane busy for the first two weeks of October. In the midst of the World Poetry Slam and Spokane is Reading events, Spokane’s first ever Poet Laureate was selected.

The Arts Commission announced Dr. Thom Caraway as the city’s poet laureate during the World Poetry Slam held in Spokane. Caraway, a Whitworth lecturer and writer, joins the Arts Commission with the mission of promoting the city’s literary community, and capturing the city through poetry.

While accepting his new post, he added something special to his thank you speech: a poem. You can listen to the poem below.

Caraway earned his PhD in English form the University of North Dakota, and two under-graduate degrees from Eastern Washington University. He wrote A Visitor’s Guide to North Dakota: Poems, and has been published in multiple journals. Caraway is a two time winner of the Thomas McGrath Prize for Poetry from the Academy of American Poets.
