Boeing Examines Fire Extinguisher Wiring on 787s
By Ashley Gross
Boeing is working with All Nippon Airways after the Japanese airline discovered faulty fire extinguisher wiring on several of its 787 Dreamliners.A-N-A said Wednesday it delayed the departure of a 787 flight to Frankfurt after discovering the wiring problem. The fire extinguisher is used to put out engine fires.
An A-N-A spokeswoman said the airline found two similar problems on its Dreamliners. Boeing Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith told investors at a conference that the company has a control center tracking the entire 787 fleet.
Another Boeing customer, Japan Airlines, decided to bring a plane bound for Helsinki back to Tokyo to check the wiring. The airline is now examining its other Dreamliners. Boeing is trying to restore confidence in its new, fuel-efficient wide-body jet after it was grounded earlier this year for several months due to battery problems. Then, last month, a fire unrelated to the lithium-ion batteries damaged an Ethiopian Airlines 787 at Britain’s Heathrow Airport.
