Gonzaga Kisses “COG” Goodbye, Eyes Big Development

By Paige Browning

On Wednesday Gonzaga University announced final plans for the most expensive construction project in the school’s 125 year history.  Gonzaga trustees have approved construction of a $60 million University Center.

Since the 1950’s, the COG (Center of Gonzaga) has held the bookstore, dining hall, and rooms for student groups.  Its replacement, the University Center, is set to be more than 165-thousand square feet, and three floors, with an 800 seat ballroom.

Two of Gonzaga's bulldog mascots at the GU President Dr. Thayne McCulloh says they plan to reclaim materials from the COG.

McCulloh: “Because there are actually a number of aspects of this facility that are usable that we’ll be using.  The bark, that will be incorporated into the new University Center as well.”
People signed the old building at a “Kiss the COG Goodbye” event.  Alumna Connie Emry says she remembers student council meetings there fifty years ago, and she’s glad for campus updates.
Emry: “It used to be scary to go down below, anything below this area you didn’t go that way, the river was train tracks. So now it’s just lovely, it flows all the way to Trent.”
Gonzaga’s Executive Vice President Marty Martin leads the project.  He says they chose Portland-based Hoffman Construction as the general contractor.  The architects will be Spokane’s Bernardo-Wills, and Portland’s Opsis Architecture.
Demolition will begin in July.
