Jazz Odyssey is your journey through the world of Modern Jazz. Host Chris Kuborn takes the listener on a musical journey through the latest sounds in Jazz.
Each week Jazz Odyssey features a recording, artist, group or recordings from a specific record label and introduces that music to you. There may be a classic track from time to time but this show is all about Modern Jazz. Music from Artists like Medeski, Martin & Wood, The Esbjorn Svensson Trio, Trilok Gurtu, Garaj Mahal, United Future Organization, Stanton Moore, Niacin and a whole lot more.
This Week:
The Greyboy Allstars
One of my favorite groups started as not a cohesive practicing unit but a group of musicians asked to play for an event sponsored by the great DJ Greyboy. The music, cohesion and brillance that came out of that event is the "Grayboy Allstars". If you have not heard there recordings then this is the show for you. I look back at 3 of their 4 studio recordings and debut their latest recording "Inland Emperor". This band IS Modern Jazz - or at least as I percieve it and want to know it! Great Band, great new recording, great episode of the ODC.
About the host:
Chris has been a musician as long as he can remember, playing a wide variety of percussion instruments. In college he played with the jazz band, and was introduced to the steel drum, an instrument he still plays today. His music has allowed him to travel the globe, having performed in the Eastern USA, Canada, Europe and South America. He still performs with the steel group "Island Magic."
Chris has been on the air since college, hosting a variety of shows from alternative to classical, including a jazz show. Since then he has remained active in the radio community, working on numerous occasions with NPR affiliates in Wisconsin and Ohio. Chris has been the host of the Wednesday-night jazz show since April of 2007.
