Searchers Find Body Of Missing Idaho Hiker After A Month

By Adam Cotterell

Searchers have found the body of a hiker who disappeared more than a month ago at south-central Idaho’s Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Park rangers searching in a helicopter found the body of Jodean Elliott-Blakeslee Tuesday evening. She was last seen September 19th with her hiking partner Amy Linkert. Searchers found Linkert’s body more than three weeks ago. Elliott-Blakeslee’s body was a little more than a mile from Linkert’s and less than half a mile from the highway.

Craters of the Moon superintendent Dan Buckley says for a long time they didn’t think to look for the 63-year-old Elliott-Blakeslee in the place where they eventually found her body.
“It surprises us that the two women made it as far as they did out on the lava flows", says Buckley. He added, "How they made it that far over that difficult terrain amazes us.”

Buckley doesn’t think he could get to the place where Elliott-Blakeslee’s body was found on foot. He speculates she knew where the highway was and was desperate to get to it. Her body will be taken to a medical examiner in Pocatello to determine the cause of death.
