University of Idaho Women's Basketball On National Stage

By Glenn Mosley

For the first time since 1985, the women’s basketball team from the University of Idaho is playing in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. UI President Duane Nellis says playing in the tournament is a great achievement for the team and a chance for the university to be on a national stage.

Playing in front of national television audiences in collegiate athletic contests is not only an opportunity for the players to test themselves against the best competition in the country, but it’s also an opportunity for their universities to put a best foot forward in front of those same audiences.

Duane Nellis: “I think it does rally our alumni, certainly the news media, it creates tremendous visibility, even in recruiting new students.”

Nellis says the experience playing on Saturday will be a very positive one for the team, the university, and for the state.

Idaho earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Western Athletic Conference Championship. Idaho plays the University of Connecticut on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
