Number One Ranking Closer Than Ever for Zags, After Winning WCC Title

By Paige Browning

After a strong win on Saturday, the Gonzaga men’s basketball team is the West Coast Conference Champion.  But, the excitement goes beyond that in Spokane.
“We’re number one” rang out in chants from the Gonzaga student section as the Bulldogs bit off an 81-52 victory over University of Portland, Saturday.  The Zags are number one in the WCC, but come Monday, they could be number one in the nation. A ranking the team has never seen.
Current top-ranked Indiana, number three Duke, and number four Michigan all had losses this week.  Gonzaga has the best record in the nation, at 29-2.
Their WCC title and number two rank have been plenty to launch the team, once again, into the nation’s spotlight.   A possible number one ranking would mean another level of basketball royalty for these darlings of Spokane.  They head to Las Vegas for the WCC tournament this week.
The un-ranked women’s team already became WCC champions this year, something they have done for nine, I repeat, nine years in a row.
Watch for the men’s rankings sometime Monday morning.
