Fire Still Growing on Colville Reservation

By Steve Jackson

The fire burning on the Colville Reservation continues to grow. The Devil's Elbow Fire Complex is now over 19,000 acres. About 700 firefighters battled the blaze over the weekend. 32 people have been evacuated, and about 150 homes are threatened. One abandoned house has been destroyed.

Fire spokesperson Kathy Moses says the big fear now is that a major storm system with dry lightning expected to come in Tuesday may produce even more fires.

Moses: “We are anticipating the weather to be coming in tomorrow, and we have put some crews on standby for intial attack, and that means if some other fires start they would be sent to those fires.”

The Devils Elbow Complex is only 4 percent contained.
