The dedication brought together a community of medical leaders, politicians, and business-people who see the impact of the building reaching far from the Spokane campus.

The new LEED certified Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences building took two years to complete, but WSU Spokane Chancellor Lisa Brown says the idea sparked much earlier. “This really is a vision that I think probably began about the day Expo ’74 wrapped up” said former state senator Brown.

The building is 125,000 square feet, 2/3rds of which is dedicated to pharmacy, and includes cadaver laboratories, meeting rooms, and capabilities for advanced genomics research.

A study done by Greater Spokane Incorporated says the growing medical school will bring Spokane 9,000 new jobs and 1.6 billion dollars in annual economic impact by the year 2030.

The building will allow for medical school class sizes with at least 80 students, and possibly up to 120. The college of pharmacy has already successfully recruited 14 top researchers to enhance the learning environment.

The majority of the funding came from the Washington legislature, with large gaps made up by Washington State University. Students will take their first classes in the building in January.
