City Update: New Multicultural Appointee

By Paige Browning

At the city of Spokane’s periodic Monday news conference, the Mayor announced he has appointed a new member to his cabinet. Mayor David Condon has appointed Gloria Ochoa (oh-choh-a) as the city’s director of local governmental and multicultural affairs.

Ochoa served most recently as chief judge for Spokane Tribal Court, is an adjunct professor at Gonzaga’s law school, and chairs the governors Commission on Hispanic Affairs. Condon says her experience is well respected and she will assist in multiple areas in city hall.

Condon: “Key to that, obviously with her legal background, is the task force recommendations from the criminal justice commission. And I really felt by having that point person that has both a legal and a judicial background key, as the city moves forward in implementing and working with the criminal justice commission in some of their suggestions.”

Ochoa replaces Gerry Gemmill, who recently joined Whitworth University as the vp of finance and administration.
